The idea of Birthstones in modern society is closely linked to the Christian Bible amongst one of its origins. In 1912. The list of stones that the Jewelers Of America Association formalized as the official Birthstone List has its origins in the Bible.According to the book of Exodus a High Priest Aaron was instructed by God to create a breastplate with 12 Gemstones set in it, The 12 stones are for each of the Tribes of Israel. These are:

7.Ligure.

During the eigth and ninth centuries Christians assigned stones to the 12 Apostels:

2.Andrew -- Ruby
3. James and John -- Emerald
4.Phillip -- Carnelian
5. Bartolomew -- Peridot
6. Thomas -- Aquamarine
7. Mathew -- Topaz
8. James -- Sadonyx
9. Thaddeus --Chrysoprase
10. Simon -- Zircon
11. Matthias -- Amethyst
12 Paul -- Sapphire
In the Bibles book of Revalation the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem are listed in order of the Roman Calender and the foundations are to consist of :

3. Chalcedony
4. Emerald
5. Sardonyx
6. Sardus
7. Chrysolite
8. Beryl
9. Topaz
10. Chrysoprase
11.Jacinth
12. Amethyst
The wearing of Birthstones also has its origions in Tibet and Ayuverdic Indian Medicine. In the 16th Centuary Poland the idea of wearing Birthstones became popular and it was believed that the specific birthstone assigned for each of the months power was heightend during its assigned month.

Their are many variations on this list compiled by all sorts of people groups etc but it is accepted worldwide that the origional list is the one that is Valid.
